Short Description: patched a cowl slot and two elongated stack holes
|

|
I'm getting a bit more comfortable with the fiberglassing, so today I decided to use a single (two-ply) piece of fabric to cover both the cowl slot and the two elongated holes for allowing the exhaust stacks to penetrate the cowl. This seemed to work out reasonably well. but I had to mix up a second batch of resin/hardener, because the amount I first calculated would not wet out my two layers of fabric properly. my fabric weighed 141 grams, so my calculation for desired resin was 40% of that, or 56.4 grams of resin. I have trouble pouring with control, so I ended up with 60 grams of resin in the cup. Multiplying that times 27/100 gave me desired hardener of 16.2 grams, and I managed to pour that reasonably precisely. But I ended up with a lot of dry spots in my pre-wetted fabric. So I poured another 33 grams of resin into my then-empty cup, and calculated (33*27)/100 which gave me a hardener target of 8.9 grams. That gave me enough to finish out the wetting-out, but really nothing extra. So I ended up with 93 grams of resin in 141 grams of fabric, which calculates out to about 66% resin by weight, which seems excessive according to what I have been reading. My next few batches are going to be smaller pieces and I am going to try much harder to hit a 50-50 ratio of fabric to resin by weight, and see if I can see any difference in the finished product.
