Brief Description: prep for and start engine

Beautiful fall day and Dick Duncan (A&P, IA) had time to help me with first engine start,
Inspected FWF for hoses, bolts tight, etc.
Pulled bottom plugs to see if any preservation oil would drain out...Dick was leery of "hydro-lock". No oil so cleaned & gapped plugs (.015 GO, .019 No-Go guage). Re-installed bottom plugs after cleaning threads and applying anti-seize. I had paste in a tube, Dick likes liquid... I agree. Torqued plugs to 27 lbs/ft and torqued wire caps to 10 lbs/ft.
Called fuel truck and got 15 gallons each side. Pulled fuel in hose off from engine fuel pump. Rigged up hose with AN fitting to purge fuel lines. Ran 5 gallons through each side using electric boost pump. Fuel looked clean and no bubbles. re-connect fuel hose. Checked inside hoses and selector for leaks while running fuel through system.
Added 8 quarts of Phillips 20-50 "M" mineral oil. Pulled prop through by hand for about 50 turns. Then cranked starter for 3 sets of about 20 seconds each...got oil pressure to 45 PSI... good.
Install and torqued top plugs.
Dick came over and looked things over real good. Got a list of 5-6 items for improvement but nothing to stop us from firing her up. Pulled 144GP out onto taxiway, staged 2 fire extinguishers and jumped in to start. Throttle and mixture full, run high boost for 10 PSI....throttle to 1/2", mixture full rich.......press start button after entering VP secret code.....fired up after about 3 turns! Ran very well. Worked rpm's up to 1500, cycled prop a lot to get pitch to change. Backed power down....stalled out at 500 rpm before hitting mixture stop. Dick put a few turns on mixture screw....re-started with some difficulty...hot start. Ended up using some boost (Lance 20L hot starts without any boost so I was reluctant to boost and possibly flood engine) Restarted and ran up to 1700...didn't check mags but should have. Back to idle cut off and shut down.
Runs good and sounds sweet!
Need to start again another day and really look temps and p
