I went and bought 4 pens, took their springs out and threw the rest of the parts away. I slid each spring over a 6-32 screw and washer then assembled the bracket assembly onto the lights' attach brackets. The system works ok, but would work even smoother if the screws had a smooth grip instead of being completely threaded. I may tackle this later if after installing the bracket it proves to be frustrating. However, for now the idea works as planned.
