Brief Description:  New ECU/First Engine Start

Back home to try out the new ECU. Result...I blew more fuses! Something else is wrong. Found that I was able to connect the coils, all six, if I did not turn the ECU off between successive connections. Again, when I did turn the ECU off, I got another loud backfire. Damn! I started over again disconnecting then reconnecting the coils. No blown fuse. Maybe the engine will start.

I turned on the fuel pump and cranked the engine. NO start. I then noticed that I had not connected the fuel injector plugs. I connected the injector plugs and cranked the starter. OH NO!
Fuel started to pour out of the muffler onto my painted garage floor. The gas acted as a solvent on the floor paint, ruining the paint. All of the areas containing gas were protected but I didn't expect gas to come out of the muffler.

Called Jan. Sal, the man that does the wiring harnesses happen to be there. They both said that I had a grounding problem somewhere. We discovered what the problem was. There is two ECU terminals on the terminal strip. One is for power. The other is for grounding the ECU. As it turns out, the wire label on the ECU ground has a tiny ground symbol barely showing from under the terminal crimp. Thanks to Sal, the problem was identified. Now a ground will be run to the battery instead of receiving power and causing the blowing of fuses.

Before I can try to start the engine, I have to change the oil, pull the coils and the plugs from each cylinder and pump any fuel from the flooded cylinders.

After accomplishing the above, I re-assembled the ignition and connected all coils and injectors. I turned on the ECU. There was no blown fuse. I turned on the fuel pumps. Hit the starter button. And Voila! The engine started and ran very well. Great joy in hearing your engine start for the first time. I let it warm up until the coolant hoses became warm then I shut it down.
