Installed the Aileron Stops after talking to Van's. They said not to mess with the neutral settings of the ailerons. They were where they should be. They asked if I had installed the aileron stops to which I told them that I had not been instructed to install them as of yet. I was aware of the need for some sort of aileron stop and I was aware of the drawings that show the installed stops. The stops are fabricated from some aluminum angle and are only about 5/8" in size. Their purpose is to limit the upward travel and therefore the downward travel of the ailerons. The aileron hinge will hit the aileron stop as it moves upward and will set the upward limit. Just as the stop will stop the upward aileron movement, it similtaneously stops and sets the travel limit of the opposite aileron as it travels downward.
The aileron stop installation was frustrating. The Stops are small and the area to work within is small and restrictive. I tried using another builder's trick of creating a double-sided tape from a strip of painter's tape formed into a loop. The stop is barerly stuck to the aileron hinge and moved into the upward limit position. Then, with the use of a small finger jammed into the small space, the stop is then stuck laterally to the hinge mount. This didn't work for me. I did use a small piece of tape to hold the Stop on the hinge. But I put a small amount of E-6000 adhesive on the Stop. After moving the aileron to the up limit, I stuck the stop to the mount and let it dry a bit. Tape was put over the Stop and then drilled and riveted. The results were acceptable. The up limits were about 31 degrees but the down limits were 15.3 degrees and 16.9 degrees. I'll re-check the neutral positioning of the ailerons tomorrow.
