Brief Description:  Made a Form for Making a New Cowling Nose Ring

Made a Form for Making a New Cowling Nose Ring on the front of the cowling. The Nose Ring on the cowling behind the spinner is warped and not in line from side to side. Additionally, the bottom of the ring is much closer to the spinner then the top of the ring. After some thought and discussion, the best solution is to form a ring on a form and then attach that new ring to a prepared cowling opening. The nose ring opening was trimmed to provide about a 1/2-3/4" gap between the spinner and the cowling. After talks with another Subaru builder at Oshkosh, a larger opening may increase PSRU cooling. I will be making the opening as large as I can to permit air flow over the PSRU. The Opening will slope inward too.

A sheet of aluminum was trimmed to give a 1/2" flat transition from the cowling to the inner opening of the ring. Cuts were made in the inner ring surface to allow for bending of tabs inward to about a 45-50 degree angle. The angle was determined purely asthetically. Once the frame was finished, the tabs were covered in tape to fill the gaps and to form a wall. Poster board was cut in sections and taped in place to better form a cone. More nylon tape was placed over the entire form to form a somewhat smooth surface and this surface was coated with car wax as a mold release.

Two layed of 9 Oz. Satin Weave glass was applied to the mold and covered with Peel Ply. A couple of boards were placed on top of the form to insure that the flat surace of the nose ring stayed in contact with the table during setup.
