Brief Description:  Drilled the Nose Gear Retaining Bolt Hole

Drilled the Nose Gear Retaining Bolt Hole after measuring from the engine mount corners to the nose wheel stops weldment to center the gear leg. Once in place, I clamped the leg in this position and marked the leg and mount to easily reference the correct position should it move.

The correct drilling of the nose gear retining bolt hole is essential to preventing gear leg movement, creeking and furure elongation of the hole. The hole needs to be very tight. Because of this, I proceeded slowly and cautiously. After drilling the pilot hole in the engine mount to 0.25", I drilled the far side of the mount through the gear leg. From then on, I slowly expanded the pilot hole on the bottom of the mount, checking the position of the gear leg hole with a probe, to determine where the hole had to go to match the hole in the gear leg. Using a file and progressive drill bits, the bottom hole was aligned and expanded untill it was just a bit smaller then the undersized 5/16" reamer that would be used to final drill the bolt hole. Once the bottom hole was ready for the reamer, I first expanded the size to the top hole, through the gear leg hole, then final reamed the hole. A test fit of the retaining bolt showed that a small amount of tapping will be necessary to seat the bolt. This is just what is desired when drilling for the retaining bolt.

There is a small amount of gear leg play in the lower bearing area of the mount tube. It is optional to insert a small spacer such as some feeler guage leafs in the space with a small amount of silicon as a retainer. This is what I plan on doing after final leg installation.
