Brief Description:  Drilled the Left Rear Spar

Drilled the Left Rear Spar. This task has sure caused some feeling of deep concern. As the instructions clearly point out, if you mess up the drilling of the rear spar, you will have an extremely difficult fix ahead of you. This would require disassembly of the wing and the fuselage and replacement of the rear spar components. For this reason, I have measured and re-measured the wing measurements. I have delayed the task as long as I could. It is now time for some action.

I made some square templatestargets for the drilling. The edges were 5/8" from the center. This is the necessary edge distance required from the center of the drilled hole to any edge of all of the materials drilled.

Using a kids' craft glue stick, I stuck the templates on the left rear spar. The required edge distances were now clearly visualized. I used a drilling guide to drill the first #30 hole. It looked well placed. Again, the drilling guide was used to drill the 3/8" hole. This drilling guide was used to aid drilling the holes perdendicular to the spar. The third expansion of the hole was with a long shaft 1/4" drill. It was now fairly easy to see the alignment of the hole and the long shafted drill was easy to keep aligned with the hole. Next, I used an under sized 5/8" reamer to open up the hole. The hole was now looking good, nice and round. I test fit the 5/8" bolt. It was a bit too tight. I then final drilled the hole with a 5/8" reamer. The bolt now fit well within a well shaped hole without any play.

The same procedure was used on the right wing with similarly good result. I'm glad to be done with the drilling of the rear spars
