Brief Description:  Attached Flap Actuator Rods to the Flaps

Attached Flap Actuator Rods to the Flaps after talking to Van's.

The plans that came with the fuselage show the stud of the lower rod bearing end of the flap actuator rod inserting into a platenut that was installed inside the flap on the end rib. My flap construcion did not have this on the plans. My flaps have a mounting plate on the inboard end of the flap for the attachment of the actuator rod.

After talking to Van's and being referred to Drawing 26, I was able to see how this older means of rod attachment was accomplished. To attach the rod, a nut had to be held in place behind the attachment plate while the stud was screwed into it. This was awkward to say the least. After several attempts, the mission was accomplished. On the first attempt, I had put a washer on both sides of the mounting plate only to discover that there wasa no way that this would allow adequate thread protrusion from the mounting nut. Once I had a drawing to refer to, I noted that the drawings showed no washer under the nut behind the mounting plate. I did us a thin washer on the front of the mounting plate. This arrangement gave me 1-2 threads showing from the nut. This was confirmed with an inspection mirror.
