Brief Description:  Front left side skin

After speaking to Clive who is also building a 601XL just before lunch, I was feeling a little bemused as to how difficult fitting the side skin was going to be. Clive is at the same point as me in the building process and was voicing a few doubts about the whole leveling process.
After fitting the front formers, I decided to have a bash at it. I got the side skins out of storage and unpacked the left skin. The skins are all pre-drilled so it does not really leave any room for error. I removed the wing jigs and clamped the side skin in place. I had to re-arrange a few of the wooden spacers to give me access to the fuse. Once this was done I adjusted the spacers to ensure that all the pre-drilled holes would give me the correct edge distance into the top and bottom extrusions (L angles). This took a little time, but was not difficult, the limiting factor here is that the fuselage assembly must be arranged to fit the side skins. I then checked all my vertical distances to ensure things where as per the plans. Bingo, not a problem. The photo guides tell you to then mark the side skins for the gear and wing spar cut outs, but I decided to drill all the holes out to #30 to recover some #40 clecoes. The side skins also have the cut out positions pre-marked, and these are very close to where I have everything positioned, so I guess I can't be too wrong so far. Tomorrow I'll make the cut outs in the left front fuse, fingers crossed it all goes OK. Anne-Marie (my very supportive wife) thinks its looking more like a boat every day, once the right side skin is fitted we should be right to go sailing.
