Brief Description:  Drill F-796 B/C/D

Before I drill I took notice that the edge margin on the 796 will be questionable. The holes will be to far aft, close to the edge of the 796, as a result of the spacers I put in-between the Gear Leg Web and 902 Bulkhead. The plans don’t call for this spacer but a couple of logs I visit had them. Both of these logs have pictures of the questionable edge distance. Bottom line. DON’T USE THESE SPACERS. Instead, clamp the Gear Leg Web and 902 bulkhead with out clecoing the top of the 902 bulkhead to the side skin. Doing this, you will notice a slight miss alignment between the top 3 bulkhead holes and side skin. So what. Match drill it. The result will be a slight oval hole on the 3 bulkhead holes. If you don’t like it, then match drill it for a #4 rivet. The plans even say that this is an option. Me? I’ll keep it a #3 rivet.

Morel of this story is ‘Trust the plans’.

So, when I drilled the spacers and angle I didn't follow the plans at all. The plans have you do this complicated one at a time pilot hole thing. I used double sided sticky tape and drilled the whole stack at once. Glad I did, Came out nice. Glad I didn’t follow the plans.

Moral of this story “Don't trust the plans".
