Brief Description:  Prime Bulkhead Reinforcement Bars

Most of today was spent experimenting with a new primer - AFS - Aircraft Finishing Systems. I bought the primer about a month ago and had contemplated using this for the entire fuselage but, in the end, I decided to stick with the easy and convenient Sherwin Williams 988 self etching primer in a rattle can. I have been very pleased with this. However, since I had some time today and since the various bulkhead bars are not alclad, I decided to use the AFS. AFS is a waterborne primer. I washed the parts as usual with Alumaprep. Then I fiddled around with the small touch-up spray gun that I had bought over a year ago and had never used. I had to get the pressure just right - 30 psi, as well as the air and material settings. Once everything was setup, the primer went on very well. I sprayed a very light fog coat, waited 5 minutes, and then sprayed a second heavier coat. I waited another 5 minutes and sprayed a final coat. I had heard that this primer takes a long time to dry. It definitely takes longer than the 988 but not nearly as long as the Rustoleum. I was able to flip everything over and prime the other sides within an hour or two. I always open the basement window in my paint booth while painting and then close it up and turn the heat on. I'm sure it took longer to dry with the colder temperatures. I like the coverage of this paint as well as the white color. I think this will be much more durable than the 988. Besides priming the various bulkhead bars, I spent a little time drilling the tie down bracket to the F712 bulkhead and match drilling everything together. By the way, the cleanup of the sprayer was very easy since AFS is water soluable. And supposedly it is not nearly as toxic as the 2 part epoxy primers.
