Brief Description:  Main Gear Shimmy Struts

My friend Lance Seaman is building an RV-8A and made some Main Gear Shimmy Struts out of hickory wood for my RV-7A gear legs. All I had to do was cover them with two layers of fiberglass cloth and trim them to length. These are about 26 inches long and have a concave groove to accommodate the gear leg. In the pictures below, I have the hickory struts fiberglassed and fitted to the gear legs. Next, I will sand the gear leg where the struts are attached and apply West Systems Fiberglass Epoxy with Flox to the strut concave groove. This will attach firmly to the gear leg and will eventually be covered with a gear leg fairing.
