Randy Brooks and I hooked up the electronic ignition wires, but found that one wire was too short from the coil pack to the #1 plug. The wires were removed from the coil packs and laid out according to length. The wires were then popped onto the plugs per the photo in the manual.
Randy and I looked over the engine again and he said that I had run out of excuses, that he didn't see any reason to not run the engine. I made a few calls and sent a few texts to get bodies to the hangar to help with the start.The RV was pulled out of the hangar for the first time this year.
The tail was tied down, the main gear was chocked, Jeff got two fire extinguishers from his hangar and I got mine for the cockpit. The flaps were raised and the fuel selector was positioned to the right fuel tank. I started the engine for the first time!
John immediately motioned for me to shut down the engine. The Scat tube between the air inlet and the filtered air box had come off immediately at one end, so that ended start #1. The vibration of the engine had shaken the Scat tube off.
After a longer Scat tubing was installed, start #2 was run. I talked with Randy on the radio as the engine stabilized. No external problems were noted, but the tachometer indicated rpms that were approximately half the normal reading, between 450-600 rpm. The oil temp slowly rose to about 75 degrees. Doing a mag check, I found that the engine would quit with the key in the Elec position. This indicated that the LightSpeed electronic ignition was not working. The engine was shut down to investigate this problem.
Randy noticed that the coil packs' terminals are marked + and -. The left coil pack is upside down. The manual states that polarity does not matter when connecting primary ignition wires to the ignition coil spades. Even though the manual states that, John and Randy rotated the left coil pack wires around.
