Brief Description:  Canopy gas strut installation

Tried looking through others build sites for a value on how far the canopy should open without much success. Looked through my 'canopy' research photo and found lots of nice pictures. All the ones I could fit a protractor on seem to range between 40 and 50 degrees. Transferring this to the plane puts the longeron mount at F.S. 34.5, with surprisingly tiny variation between the two. Discovered a plasterboard jack makes a perfect precision canopy frame propper-upper. Hmmmmmm. Gritted my teeth and drilled mounts there, counterbored for the bolt head and installed temporarily.

Trimmed instrument panel to clear struts, and leave room for a panel cover going under them later. This entailed removing the upper stiffner for about 6". Mocked up some more modest replacements that will route under the struts and cover.

Marked interfence points between canopy frame and fuselage top with carbon paper, removed canopy frame and trimmed leading edge again. [Timewarp: still interferes]

Using the cutoff stiffners and some instrument panel foam scraps made new stiffeners in a jig. To replicate the plans layed up 2 x BID over the bottom.

Off my task list whiteboard I am finally reminded to patch a boo-boo in the passenger side air vent duct, 1 x BID.

Applied a micro fillet around the base of the forward canopy lip drain 'funnel' and wrapped BID around it until it looked right. In fact it looks awful, should have used UND...
