Manual Reference:  Fluting Ribs
Brief Description:  Making Sure the Ribs are Flat

Twenty seven ribs and a lot of squeezing with the fluting pliers. It eventually was easy, but for the first five or six, I couldn't quite understand cause and effect of squeezing. Sometimes you would squeeze the bottom right and watch the bottom left end rise. Other times not. I think it had to do with whether the whole rib flange was too tight from overall squeezing. It was crazy for awhile, but then like magic, it started working most of the time. Little squeezes here and there. Sometimes I had to un-squeeze a little to correct an rib surface that was starting to go concave on me (rising on each end). But, all was well that ended well. Using drawing 11 and holding the ribs onto it gave you the specific locations you can squeeze. Thats so you don't just go ahead and squeeze where you would eventually be putting an outer skin rivet into. Need flat surfaces for riveting :):):)

Pictures show how a bad rib is made into a good rib by fluting. Find a low chair to sit on. Saves your knees and back.

Typical bow in rib. Leading edge ribs were the worst.
