I fitted the right elevator, by mounting it to the horizontal stabilizer. The fit was very nice and the travel was smooth with no binding. I checked the control surface degrees of travel with digital level and removed the flange material that is required to get the proper down travel.
I ran into an issue... I removed the recommended amount of material from the counter weight, and to my surprise it had a big void (Hollow) in the middle... probably about 5 oz of material missing. Of course that made my control surface light and out of balance. Looks like I will be calling Van's about the defective casting.
I would recommend not to remove any material and when you are ready to balance the control surface to remove small amounts using a drill. Because the plans did not work for me at all. I even left a little extra to make sure I was a bit heavy. No luck with that since it was hollow in the middle.
It is fixable... but it is easier to remove material than it is to add it back.
A properly balanced control surface should stay in any position you place it in...
