Brief Description:  PLT- headset jacks

After the counselor left I researched how to solder a headset jack and what wires go where. There are 3 wires to the microphone jack but there are also 2 wires from the PTT switch that attach to lugs on the jack. The 3 MIC wires are plain white, white/blue and a white/orange stripe. So I would not mess up I marked the lugs blue for the blue stripped wire and red for the orange striped wire. Well I did not trace the lugs to the tip and ring correctly so after a nice solder job I had the ring and tip backwards. Now here is where only 4 hours sleep comes in. I thought hey instead of trying to redo the soldered wires I could just open up the connector on the back of the intercom and swap the pin for these two wires which is what I did. I then drilled the mounting holes and installed the jacks

Of course I wanted to test things out. Everything seemed to work fine, I could hear the radios and audio alerts from the Dynon stuff but I could not transmit. I did hear a click when I pressed the PTT. I read in the manual and tried to think of all kinds of things why the unit would not transmit. Once I was ready to give up and call it a day I realized my error. Swapping the wires in the back of the connector fixed the MIC wires but this still left one side of the PTT wires on the wrong lug. DUMB. Tomorrow I will do what I should have done in the first place, re-solder the thing, of course I will put the pins back in the correct locations.

The lesson here is not to do this kind of detailed work when you have not had a good night’s sleep and that the easy route to a fix is not always the best route.
