Brief Description:  Part 1: Updated Dynon Equipment

I download the firmware install program and began to install the update to each piece of equipment; eventually I brought all of the Dynon equipment up to the latest version which is 5.4. I had one hiccup; when I used the program to check for the version number it did not recognize the D10A remote compass. When I called Dynon Tech Support they said they had heard of this before and that it was an internal issue with the unit, this would require the unit to be sent in, which would be a $250 charge but the unit would come back with a full diagnostic and be like new. Now $250 is probably cheap in the avionics repair world but I bought the unit off eBay because I wanted to save money and this would eat into the savings.

After I got off the phone I decided to go ahead and update the D10A even though I was getting the “remote compass” warning, the warning gives you the option to proceed. I proceeded because I figured it could not hurt. After updating the D10A it then could see the remote compass, I had the D10A at version 5.4 (originally 2.12) and the compass was at 4.04. So now that the firmware update program could see the remote compass I ran the update again and everything is now at 5.4. I called back Dynon Tech Support to tell them what I found so some poor sole does not spend $250 needlessly. The guy was surprised and planned to talk to the engineers, the thing should have seen the remote compass from the get go since it was communicating with the EFIS just fine.
