Brief Description:  Trimming canopy flange

Well I missed most of the day away from home so not much done in the shop. I did manage to try out some more tools cutting the Plexiglas. I used one of the Van’s supplied cutoff wheels attached to a cordless drill, an air cutoff wheel, and a Roto-Zip tool.

The wheel on the cordless drill was a nice slow speed but makes the cuts painfully slow, which I guess is a good thing. The Van’s cut off wheels have a ¼” center so it would not fit the high speed cut off wheel tool I have so I tried just using the wheel for cutting metal. This worked OK but even with the 30 gal compressor it just can’t keep up with the continuous use of the air tool. The Roto-Zip was by far the nicest tool to work with, it cut straight and fast, I did not try to make the cut all the way through in one pass, instead I would run the tool up the line a bit and then back, slowly making my way through the material. My last cut with the Roto-Zip it died, right in the middle of the cut, just plain quite, no grinding smoking or anything. I thought it might be some type of thermal switch and it just got hot but after cooling it still does not work. It is most likely dirty inside, I used the too last when doing masonry work on the front of the house cutting the faux stones to size, there is a lot of dust with those stones. Mine is a single speed model they make a variable speed version that I will pick up; that I think will make it a perfect tool for cutting the canopy.

So far of all the tools I like the Roto-Zip best but it does create a lot of vibration as it cuts which makes me nervous. The next choice is either the cordless drill or the cut off wheel. The sides’ sand down nicely so any small deviations in the cut can be dressed down with some sanding.
