Brief Description:  Set fork breakout - started mains

Today I continued with the gear. I set the breakout force to the 22 lbs called for in the plans but was not happy with it; I was getting lower numbers going one direction. It was then I noted a small step I missed in the instructions, once you tighten the nut you have to secure it, so when I pulled against the nut nice reading the other way the nut would loosen, DUH!

I started over and used a clamp to hold the nut while I pulled to test the breakout force. I settled on 24 lbs which is higher than the plans call for but my reading has told me that after you start flying the thing the breakout force is reduced as the parts wear together, so some recommend on first installation a higher setting, so that is what I am going with.

I then had to drill for the cotter pin; you just pick an opening in the castle nut and drill. What I did was start the hole then removed the leg and jigged it up on the drill press; I first drilled the hole to 7/64” then drilled up to 1/8” which is the size of the cotter pin. Turned out nice if I do say so myself.

The last thing I did this evening was drill the main gear flanges to accept the 5/16 bolts. I have non-stock main gear and brakes so I have to read up on those assembly instructions. That will be the project for tomorrow.
