Brief Description:  1. Final drilled 802 Rudder Spar, reserached nut p

This morning I started off doing some research, i.e. posted onto VAF forum with regards to nut plates. The first ones I have to deal with are on the rudder spar. My question was do you need to cleco them onto the part for match drilling. I noticed that the rivet holes on the nut plates are already the proper size, so why run a drill through them. There is a chance that if the drill tilted you could mar the nut plate and thereby remove the corrosion protection. Well I received a few answers and on EAA Technical Counselor said you did not have to have them on for the drilling. I also asked about priming the nut plates. As with anything primer wise, it depends on the individual. I did learn the nut plates are treated with a layer so prevent corrosion, so more primer would be overkill. However some recommended priming the parts of the nut plate that contact the other metals as an added layer of corrosion protection; I think this is the way I will go.

I match drilled all of the holes for the 802 rudder spar in about an hour, and then I was at a standstill since I am still waiting on the new stiffener from Van’s. The next step in the instructions requires the skin; I need to rivet on the stiffeners and bend the skin before I can do anymore on the rudder. So I decided to jump to the elevator stiffeners. See next long entry for today on those.
