Brief Description:  2. Elevator stiffener fabrication

I moved on to the stiffeners for the elevator, and there are a lot of them. It was initially confusing trying to determine which was which stiffener. You get extra E-720 DEF parts and you cut them to size and they become the E-720 JKL. Also all the stiffeners up to now get a taper cut in them, which is true of the elevator except for the E-720 H, there is no taper since it is in a deeper part of the elevator, at first I was looking for the guide holes to cut the taper, I finally looked at the DWG and low and behold no taper.

I may need a new part, one of the sections of angle had a crease in the first part of it and this caused the E-720 J to have a curve in the rivet side of things (see photo 1). I used a hammer on the flat anvil part of my vice but I am not sure this will float. On Monday I will contact Van’s to find out if this was OK or not. Photo two shows two stiffeners, you can see the flattened crease of the stiffener in question.

I did not use a saw this time to cut the stiffeners, but the big metal cutters you see in photo 3 of the stiffeners. This seemed to work much better than the aviation snips that caused me to ruin one of the rudder stiffeners. Not much to say, I rough cut the stiffeners, sanded and scotch brite wheeled them smooth.

I have to leave for work for the next 8 days and then I have a surgery planned so I will be out of building commission for a while, not sure how long the recovery will be with respect to work and building. I have a compressed ulnar nerve in my elbow and they will be moving the nerve under some muscles on the inside of my arm. My guess is it will take a while for the muscles to reattach and heal. I have a few Tony Bengalis books I bought to read during my recovery, so even though I will not be building hopefully I will become a better builder with the knowledge from the books.
