Brief Description:  Elevator fit and movement

I started off finishing the fit of the left horizontal stab tip. Once happy with that I laid up 2 layers of BID cloth to both tips and left them to cure.

I replaced the Avery pins with bolts in the elevators, like many other builders I get less freedom of movement in the elevators as the nuts are tightened. I lubricated the bearings some and this helps but they just don’t fall into a neutral position with the nuts tight. I called Van’s and though not perfect this will not be detectable in flight. They mentioned that some are purist and but as long as I get free movement with a light touch I will be fine. The issue is my hole drilled for the center bearing might be slightly off; the only way to get it perfect is to weld the hole closed and re-drill. They did not think this was needed, the guy mentioned one of the better flying RV-4s he has flown had a 3/8” error between the left and right elevators.

I checked the elevator travel and wouldn’t you know it the numbers are the same as 3 year ago. 28.4 nose up and 25 nose down. Well within the travel limits allowed.
