Brief Description:  Final fit the wings

The wing fitting took about 4 hours to install the wings and bolts. It took a little more time to set the torque on all of the bolts. As I expected the lower bolts where the pain but I managed them without too much cursing. There is no callout on the number of washers so I learned what I needed after the first two bolts. I put thin washers under the heads of the lower bolts knowing that they would have to get the torque set from the bolt side. What I learned is that so the nut does not bottom out on the bolt two full size washers are required. Since I used thin washers under the bolts on the bottom I had to use one full and one thin under the nuts.

Based on my reading working from the outside in allows you to get a wrench on things without much trouble. I grinded down one wrench but did not need it as I was able to get a regular open end wrench on the nut. I did this by lying on my stomach on the floor with my chest over the spar. I could then reach with the wrench. I could still maneuver an air ratchet to tighten things up. I used some help to get the torque set. A partner worked the torque wrench while I held the nut with the open end wrench. I only used help with the lower large nuts, you can get to the lower small bolts and the upper bolts no problem by yourself.

After buying lunch for my crew I set the torque on all the bolts left and marked with torque seal. I also installed the two AN4 bolts that go into the spar web (they have the nut plates) I had to call Van’s since the plans did not call out what size bolts, it was on an older DWG, AN4-13A in case you wonder, on washer under the bolt head did the trick.
