Brief Description:  1. Hung Engine Solo!

Today was the day; I swapped the 45 elbow for a straight one on oil out port and then set up the hardware to the mount the engine. It took longer than I thought but I managed to hang the engine solo. It would have been helpful to have another person to push and pull the engine for me but I used ratchet ropes when I needed to persuade things in place.

When I offered the engine up to the mount it looked to me like doing the lower bolts would be better, and that is what the instructions called for. I knew the first two bolts would go faster and the top seemed to line up better. I used a rope with a ratchet attachment around the front to tilt the engine; I think a load leveler would have made this easier but then I would have had to add an attach point to the engine. I was able to get one lower bolt in but not the second, so much for the first two being easy. I decided to start over and follow the “Illustrated Guide to Hang the Engine” from VAF website. This tells you to start with the top.

The top two went in fairly easily, then I fought with the lower right for 45 minutes and from my reading the last one is the tough one but #4 went in after about 15 minutes of working it. The last one was very close to being lined up; I used the bullet alignment pin from Avery and this moves the mount rubber to line things up. If there is something to remember here is that on the last one you are really moving the rubber mount, you are not going to move the engine at that point.

Also start with 2 washers under the castled nut, they only call out one but give you extra because you will need them to align the depth of the castle for the cotter pin, I am here to tell you that you will need 2 to line up the castled nut for the cotter pin. I wish I knew this before I stared.
