Brief Description:  Engine hanging day NOT!

Today was going to be engine hanging day. I am glad I planned to try this solo because it would have sucked to have invited someone to help to then tell them to go home. After I had the hardware set up, I thought I should read over the instructions once more and see if I prepared everything on the engine. They suggest installing the fitting at the top of the engine; this is the return oil from the oil cooler. Well the plans call for a straight nipple but with the oil filter adapter the hose would interfere with the filter. A 45 elbow is needed and I don’t have one. Resigned that I would not be hanging the engine I turned to other things. One of the things suggested in the instructions was to set up the prop cable on the bracket while you have easy access.

I first safety wired the screws I had to remove to install the bracket. I then installed the cable, spinning the far end of the cable to thread the governor end into the bearing worked like a charm. The plans say that you may not be able to set the cable to hit both stops, so plan to arrange it so you can hit the fine pitch stop since the full course stop is not needed in flight. My arm is set up almost perfectly I think, I do have the cable sheath anchored at the end of its threads and the bearing is threaded on 14/32 and the minimum is 12/32. I can pull the cable and hit both fine and course pitch stops, until I have it hooked up to the control quadrant I will not know if I run out of lever before the course stop.

I am looking into using the straight nipple for the port that goes to the oil cooler, I could then use the 45 elbow there and at the top and get the engine hung. The lower port is very tough to get at so I need someone to confirm the straight nipple works; it looks like it will not interfere with the prop control cable bracket which I think was why the 45 was called out but my governor is different than the one Van’s sell. Oh well engine hanging is close but not today.
