Today my order from Aircraft Spruce arrived which contained the autopilot servos. I was going to wait on these but I could not see having to crawl back in the tail to hook this stuff up and disrupting the flight control setup. I decided to install the servos and get the flight controls as smooth as I can now rather than doing the job twice.
I started by installing the D-sub connector (female) to the servo, less the two unused wires that are to be used for some possible future device. This went well, I was glad I took a photo of the male side I wired up a long time ago. There is no pin out called for in the instructions, you have to make one up if you are going to use this type of connector.
I had to remove the bell crank to get the AN3-5A bolt into the forward hole for mounting the servo. The call out was for a flat washer as well as a star washer but this would cause the bolt head to interfere with the rivets on the bell crank. I decided to leave of the flat washer and just use the star washer; this gives me plenty of clearance. The bolt heads have holes drilled so these will also get safety wired.
The last thing I did was attach the D-sub pins to the roll servo.
D-Sub connector installed
Still need to safety wire bolts and secure wire harness
Roll servo pins installed, two wires at the bottom of photo are unused at this time.
