Brief Description:  Passenger Side Door

Today I tacked the passenger side door and after numerous (25+) times of putting it on and taking it of the aircraft, I had it trimmed good enough to put it on hinges. That really made the final alignment much easier and I have most of the gaps really tight. I'll keep sanding them here and there to get exactly right, but for the most part it is done...whew!Couple of things I learned about trimming the doors:1) The scribe lines don't really mean squat. I don't even think they're a good guide. I trimmed up to the line, and then found in some cases I still had to remove and 1/8 or more material in some places to get them to fit. I don't thing the plans are very clear about this.2) There are a couple of tools I found absolutely necessary to achieve a good fit: my Dremel tool, belt sander, 22" Perma-Grit sanding bar and an 8" Vixen file.3) Don't worry about the front and rear alignment tabs. Once you get comfortable that the door is semi-close, cut these babies off so you really can get the thing aligned. The door almost seemed to lay perfectly in place once these were gone and made the final trimming much easier.4) Wear a mask! I hate fiberglass, and it gets in everything. Take your mask off for even a few minutes and you'll end up with a mouth full of glass.5) Do the detail sanding after the door is attached via the hinges. You really cannot have the door on and off for the final sanding and get it back exactly to the same place. The hinges will help in this respect and make it consistently in the same location again and again.(Disclaimer: THIS MAY NOT WORK FOR YOU - FOLLOW THIS ADVISE AT YOUR OWN RISK!)Well...that's about it. Hope your trimming goes well. So far this has been the biggest hangup for my project. I have agonized over doing this because I wanted the seams to be dead on and I didn't want to screw them up. Really took me a while to get mentally prepared.
