Used some tie down straps to hold the rectangle. The white stuff is several layers of paper to protect the aluminum. Once it was banded, placed 28mm shims to act as a stop and just slowly clamped the 3/4 MDF down to them with the banded material sandwiched between the table top and the MDF.
