Brief Description:  MLG Fairings - laying out TE hinges

Van's has the fairing trailing edges closed by using hinges with 1/16" hinge pins. In all those hinges that come with the kit, don't mix these up with the other hinges that have larger pins.

DWG 2 has a template for trimming the MLG fairings, but I found I needed to cut them ~1.5" shorter than the template. But better to start out too long than short!!

To close the trailing edges, tape the trailing edges together, drill the holes in the hinge flanges, then slide the hinge in, clamp it in place, then match drill through the fiberglass. Countersink drill the fiberglass face holes, pull the hinge pin to open it up, rivet the flanges on, slip the pin back into place and wah-la, it's together. At least that's the idea.

There are some "tricky" aspects to this however (in other words, don't do what I did)........

1. Don't drill the holes exactly across from each other on the hinge because the cleco's hit each other.

2. Don't place the hinges exactly tangential to the trailing edge of the fiberglass. The hinge needs to be slightly forward so there is pull down pressure at the trailing edge. The first one I did, didn't take this into account and there is a gap at the trailing edge I'll have to fill in.... urrgggg!!!

3. Be VERY careful when riveting that you don't squeeze any of the hinge loops!! I had to reopen a couple loops because the pin wouldn't go back through.
