Brief Description:  Trim Crossover Pipes for O-320; Install Headers

Today I decided to install the Vetterman exhaust system. The first step was to cut the cross-over pipes to fit the narrower O-320. They come sized for the O-360. These pipes were already marked where they needed to be cut so I just needed to trim them using a cutoff wheel in my Craftsman all-in-one cutter. Both pipes were then deburred using a scotchbrite wheel.

The next step was to connect the pipes for the aft two cylinders 3 and 4. They just twist together such that the locking/alignment pin on the one pipe inserts into the hole of the other pipe.

All of the exhaust ports on the cylinder heads had plastic caps inserted from Aero Sport Power. I expected pickling oil to gush out of each port when I removed the caps but this only happened on one cylinder. The exhaust valves must be closed on all of the other cylinders. Aero Sport Power provided exhaust gaskets as did Van's in their firewall forward kit so I have an extra set.

Next I coated all of the stud threads with anti-sieze compound and bolted the 3 and 4 pipes to their respective cylinder heads. It took a variety of tools, universal joints, sockets, extensions, etc to torque the nuts but I was able to torque them all. Some were more difficult than others.

The process was then repeated for the forward two cylinders,,,connect pipes 1 and 2, and bolt the assembly to the corresponding cylinder heads.
