Brief Description:  Clamp and Drill Left Tie Down to Spar

When I lined up the one measured and drilled hole in the left tie down and clamped it to the spar, I realized that this hole was the top right hole in the tie down and that it needed to be matched accordingly to the spar. I didn't realize this when I did the right tie down. I kept my fingers crossed that maybe by shear luck I had it on right when I drilled it to the spar. Based on the marks I made on the tie down when drilling that first hole based on the measurements in the plans, I could still tell which hole this was. Unfortunately, it was clecoed and drilled to the lower left hole in the spar rather than the upper right. Bummer. My first thought was that I was going to have to order another tie down from Van's. As it turned out, rotating the tie down to the right position still had the holes lining up. The bottom edge of the tie down is now much closer to the lower edge of the spar. Just to make sure the holes line up perfectly, I ran the 3/16" drill through all 8 holes again with the part rotated into the right position. Close call. It would have really been a pain if I didn't notice this until the wing was done. The tie-down would have been 1/4" or more up or deeper into the wing than it should have been. I lucked out after all. Once the all of the big holes were drilled, I drilled the #40 holes for the 4 nutplates that will be riveted to each tie down and the spacers. These nutplates are NOT riveted to the spar to make future maintenance possible once the wing is complete.
