Brief Description:  Cleco Flaps Together; Rivet Bottom Left

I set up several scrap pieces and practiced riveting and bucking alone since I hadn't done this in a while. I'm glad I did since I made a lot of mistakes trying to chose the right pressure settings, the right flush set and the right bucking bars to use. I found that I had a lot of trouble using the swivel flush set. It was hard to keep everything from floating around - the set itself, the angle of the set, the bucking bar, etc. I found that the easiest set for me to use was the straight, solid shaft, 1" flush set with the rubber o-ring. I seemed to be able to keep this set centered and stable while concentrating on keeping the bucking bar straight. Once I felt comfortable riveting alone again on the practice sheets, I then went back to my project. I clecoed both flaps back together and then removed the spars so I could reach in and buck the rivets that hold the skin to the ribs. I set these rivets first. This was progressively harder as I moved from the wide leading edges to the narrow trailing edges. Using a small bucking bar also requires a few more hits with the gun to set the rivets because of the small mass of the bar. Once the bottom of the ribs were riveted to the bottom skin, I then riveted the long row of rivets that join the top skin to the bottom skin. Since this row of rivets is very close to the trailing edge, there was very little room to manuever the bucking bar and my fingers in. I ended up getting sores on my fingers on the skin just under the nails. Very painful as I was bucking. I ended up placing bandaids on each of my finger tips which helped out tremendously. Well, the bottom of the left flap is riveted together. It turned out very well. I was a little apprehensive about doing this myself but I actually think it was easier doing this alone than having someone to help. One hand always knew what the other was doing. If I was feeling some pain or if the bucking bar got tilted with one hand or the rivet set got tilted with the other hand, I could always stop immediately to get everything straightened out again. No dents and everything looks great. On to riveting the top.
