Brief Description:  Attended FWF Workshop with William Wynne

I've been away from building for several days because of a trip to Cloverdale, CA (90 miles north of San Francisco) to attend a two-day 601XL/Corvair Workshop in the hanger of Quality Sport Planes at the Cloverdale Airport (O60). This is the west coast operation for Zenith and is the site of rudder workshops and ongoing work by various quick builders who would like company help. Woody Harris from Vacaville, CA has a quick build 601XL that was ready for his Corvair engine to be hung on the front, so he brought it and that was our learning platform. Additionally, John Kearney brought his completed Corvair engine (on test stand) so we were able to see and hear the engine in operation. While we didn't get the engine running on Woody's plane, we benefitted for lots of time with William being immersed in his philosophy of building and risk management. That alone was worth the price of the trip. I elected to stay over for the Zenith Fly-In on Sunday and had a great time asking more in-depth questions of William one-on-one. It was also a treat to connect with some new friends in the 601XL/Corvair world like Larry Husky, Terry Reidl and Gary Boothe. One other highlight was being able to fly with Michael Heintz in Old Number One...the prototype 601XL made and test flown by Chris Heintz. It is registered in Canada, but was here in Northern California for a short time. Michael showed me some of its steep bank capabilities that were exhilerating. He's is a very good pilot and he certainly knows his way around these planes. Regarding planes, I was able to closely inspect several completed XLs and two quickbuild XLs in progress, which really helped me further visualize how this plane comes together. With this shot of adrenaline, I have plenty of motivation to last me for months.
