Brief Description: Removed aft skirt to trim off excess fiberglass.
This morning I slowly pulled the bottom edges of the fresh fiberglassed rear skirt until it released from the underlying tape mold. It came off rather easily and I was surprised. It was quite flexible but not too flexible and I think it will stiffen up when I start adding the filler for fairing. Today I'm just going to trim off the excess ragged edges. The final cuts will be made later.
I put the skirt on my capeted work bench upside down with the skirt ends pointed up. Since I did not have Charlotte's help, I placed a sand bag in the middle to hold it down and used some stryrofoam to hold it from flopping around as I trimmed it. I put on a dust mask and face plate and used my die grinder with a cut-off wheel to trim the edges. It took some time because I had to move the skirt every so often as I went around the U-shaped edges. While cutting the edges the wheel tried to bind because of the constant curvature and I would have to cut off a piece before I could continue. I finally got it trimmed after flinging fiberglass dust all over the garage. Thank goodness for the dust mask, face plate and gloves.
