Brief Description: Match drilled gear sockets to gear legs.
While waiting on our paint order to arrive on Monday (hopefully) I decided that we would go ahead and drill out the gear leg sockets. The drawing calls out to insert the gear leg into the socket and backdrill the socket to 5/16" or 0.311" if you have the bit because that is what the gear leg is drilled. I didn't have a 0.311", therefore I had to use the 5/16" bit. You've got to do this because I don't think you have room to get a drill into the fuselage once the sockets are installed. Anyway, it's much easier to do before installation.
Setting this up on the drill press was a complicated affair since there were no straight or square areas to clamp to the drill table. I blocked up the leg end on the workbench and used shims and 4"x4"s to clamp the socket end to the drill table. Getting the holes vertical and square required the use of a metal square and a 9/32" bit through the holes to line everything up. Charlotte squirted Boelube as I drilled. Everything worked out OK, but I thought later that it might have been easier just using a hand drill. Oh well, its done!
