Brief Description: Practiced driving drift pins into carrythru spar.
I tried to read all the info on the VAF forum about installing the wing bolts. I then made drift pins from Lowe's 7/16" grade eight bolts by cutting off the threads and grinding the points smooth and rounded them to make it easy to tap into the spar carrythru and wing spar holes. I bought some LPS-2 spray can lubricant as per the manual for lubricating the pins and holes. I then rounded up the tools to practice taping the pins into the holes.
I found that I could tap the pins in without using too much force on the mallet. Removing the pins was another matter. I made some wooden dowel punches to tap out the pins without damaging the holes. The 7A gear mount makes it difficult to reach the ends of the drift pins to use the punch, but I managed to remove the pins. A pry bar and wood fulcrum block for protecting the carrythru was also used to remove the recalcitrant pins.
The actual final attachment bolts are close tolerance and will be even more difficult to install.
