Brief Description:  Shaping Lower Winglets 1

These lower winglets are involved. I have pics of fast aircraft with these things just cut off. I finally trimmed my down from the plans nearly 9" high to 3" high at the TE. It was a nervous cut, not so much in the execution, that was easy, but rather trying to work out what I need here that will still look OK and function well.

Once the upper waste was removed I flattened out the tops and quickly saw that now is the time for the filler block you see in pic 1 to be added. In fact it will need just a little more filler aft of the block to make the curves work. The CnC cut winglet piece is just not quite right to make the angles flow.

In pic two I had my basic shape but after some thought and input from a wiser head, the conclusion was to make the lower winglet symetrical as the lowest drag possible. I can also incorporate an inside fairing as I do the reshaping rather than adding one later. Pic 2 shows the excess that needs removal to make the sides a mirror match.

Pic 3 shows a symetrical shape on the bottom now and I've flowed the insides to match back into the rudder and wing. I'll do some better shots in the next log enties, but you get the idea. I've got a thought for the side strobe lights too. I still need to do a bit more work on the shape and maybe another micro fill. I'm not exactly decided on how to treat the bottom yet, it will probably be just a rounding of the edges and into a point at the rear. That point will dictate the rest of the shape to some degree. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens.
