Brief Description:  Jointing first wing blocks

Joining the wing blocks. We are moving into unchartered territory.... or at least diverting from the plans. The first task has been to join the two large lower wing blocks FC2 and FC3.

I made a couple of extra clamping pads and used the threaded rod clamp set up to get things in place. I spent a couple of hours playing with this. The idea was to get the shear web area flush and the sides straight and in line. The trailing edge can get adjusted later, the other two areas are more important.

Once I had a plan I used the new glue which only allows about 15 minutes setup time. I then used long hat pins to finish off a good fit as in pic 2. A straight edge is on the bottom of the spar cap area and I used my 40" ruler to ensure the sides were as straight as possible. The thickness of the wing seems pretty correct and almost equal on both sides.

The next step was to make tempates for the end of the wing and one for the FC1 large block that gets glued next. I'll use the lines on the templates which will be pinned to the ends of the wing as references. Looks like I'm going to draw out measurements on the floor and get the spar out to line it up. I'm getting some help for this brain stretching exercise... and help is what I need for this. The upside is I may get really straight wings and correctly set up to the spar at this early stage.
