Brief Description:  Mating the tailcone to the fuse

For me, this was a major milestone. The hard part was aligning the forward/mid fuse assembly that was sitting on the rolling cradle and the tailcone which was sitting on a low work table. Out of shear blind luck, the heights were close enough that all I had to do was shim the tailcone up a couple of inches and push the 2 assemblies together. It was actually mating the 2 assemblies together that proved to be a little trouble as the tailcone skins get sandwiched in between the mid-fuse skins and the mid-fuse internal structure. It was a tight fit and you’d get one edge in and the opposite side would pop out. In hindsight this would have been easier with two people. Once I got it started that next problem was there was no way to “push” the two assemblies together the final 3/16” or so. My solution was to attach ratcheting straps to the tail and spar bulkheads and then ratcheted the tailcone on to the fuse—worked like a charm. I then match drilled everything and separated the assemblies for deburring. While I still had easy access to the tailcone interior, I went ahead and finished up some misc tasks. First, I Prosealed on my static ports (SafeAir) and plumbed them with the supplied push-on connectors and tubing. I wanted to keep the tubing runs as symmetrical as possible to avoid static errors so I ran both lines to a tee connector centered on the next bulkhead forward of the ports. Next I installed the pitch servo. Then I removed the AHRS shelf, added new mounting holes & nutplates for the Garmin G3X AHRS, and reinstalled the shelf. Finally, I installed the magnetometer bracket on the top of the bulkhead that’s next to the static ports. I had to trim the bulkhead a bit to get the bracket to fit which was a bear in that confined space, not to mention trying to drill, deburr, then rivet it on as I had to shoot/buck the rivets as there was no clearance to use a squeezer. After I got these misc tasks done, I mated the fuse and tailcone for the final time and with Toni’s help riveted them together.
