Brief Description: Initiate FTT attachment to stab
Both fiberglass tail tips (FTTs) were bowed so that, if they were riveted to the stab skin, the tail ends would be too close to fit the elevator. The PAM recommended softening the FTTs with a heat gun, flexing them open, and then letting them cool. However, when I tried this, it was difficult to avoid narrowing the FTT so that the gap between the FTT and the stab skin would be excessive.
To avoid this problem, I combined the dimensions for the end rib (6T1-1) and the rib tip (6T1-8) to make a rib-end form to place inside of the warmed FTT while flexing it. This procedure worked quite well and I could remove most of the bow from the FTTs w/o causing them to narrow down. Happily, I was able to use the some of the plywood from the shipping crate for the rib form.
After working on the FTTs for a while, I was able to put them onto the stab ends, and maintain a separation of ~2210-mm at the ends of the FTTs while having an adequate edge distance for the rivets through the stab skin. I may put a narrow strip of .016 aluminum inside of the FTT to reinforce that area a bit.
