Brief Description:  Consult w/ ZAC on stab/elevator building sequence

I called ZAC and talked to Caleb Re: the assembly sequence for the stab and elevator and a rivet problem:

a. Caleb agreed with the assembly sequence I had worked out:

i. Drill and cleco the fiberglass tail tip (FTT) and 6T1-8 to the ends of the stab
ii. Get the elevator alll drilled and clecoed together, except for the hinge and horns
iii. Cleco the hinge into the stab
iv. Mate the clecoed elevator and the hinge and mark the correct position for the hinge attachment to the elevator
v. Drill ~ 4-5 #40 holes in the elevator and hinge, cleco, verify movement and clearances.
vi. Adjust elevator position as necessary and redrill if need be
vii. Drill remaining #40 holes in hinge and elevator
viii. Remove hinge from elevator and install the horns
ix. Finally, drill holes in the elevator to final diameters, dis-assemble, deburr, prime, re-assemble & rivet. It's not clear if I should rivet the hinge to the elevator, but I don't see a downside at this point. However, the hinge probably should not be riveted to the stab until after the stab has been fit, drilled, and clecoed to the fuselage.

b. I told Caleb that some of the A4 rivets on the stab had been set with an A5 rivet head. He thought I should drill them out and re-do. Unfortunately, that would required the complete dis-assemble of the stab; otherwise, the rivet ends would be rattling around inside the stab. I decided that the rivets were tight enough, on the whole, and that I would leave them in place. Partly I am concerned that drilling out is likely to enlarge at least some of the holes, which might weaken the rivet joint more than any slight gap that resulted from using the A5 head.

c. Caleb told me that the stab is symetrical around the center chord.

d. Caleb verified that there was no problem delaying the final attachment of the FTTs until after the stab had been fit to the fuselage. He said that the FTTs are purely cosmetic--they are there for appearance.

e. Caleb said that there would be some left over extrusion pieces from the fuse
