Brief Description:  Second run, prop and oil pressure.

Found loose mag compass screw on floor. Reinstalled all four screws with lock washers.

Performed compression tests (cold) with following results 79,78,78,78. Wanted to make sure vibration was not due to a bad cylinder. Checked prop tracking. Only 1/16” off. Tightened up mounting bolts where oil leaks had been observed after Saturday’s first run. (Left mag, oil temp sensor, #3 cylinder valve cover, fuel pump cover, oil filter cover, starter gasket.) Was not able to get at tach cable screw cap. (It still leaks.) Installed grommet where crankcase vent passes through baffling. Washed down engine with mineral spirits.

Called Steve at Sensenich about vibration. He checked the records to make sure this prop has not been sitting around for a long time. It has not. He is very willing to inspect the prop and check the balance, but we would have to ship it to Florida. He confirmed our model number is the correct model for our airframe/engine. He advised swapping the prop end-for-end, said that often helps vibration problems. Suggested trying prop on a different airplane if we had one available.

Pulled plane out and did run up as follows:

Mins RPM GPH Oil P. Temp Vibration Voltage
5 1000 .8 40 - 35 None Minimal 11.9
1 1500 2.2 45 None Minimal 12.3
1 2000 45 None Slightly More 12.4
1 2300 42 Bot Grn Moderate* 12.6
1 1500 20 Bot Grn Minimal
1 1000 10 Bot Grn Minimal
1 600 7 Bot Grn Minimal 11.9
* Much better than Saturday
Cylinder head temperature measured with IR after shut-down about 250.
Called Steve back with results of run. His offer of a factory inspection remains open. He also suggests we could try all six clocking positions of the prop looking for minimum vibration. In my opinion in order for this to be effective we would have to put a dynamic prop balancer on to get accurate readings. Steve confirmed there is nowhere to easily install weights on this prop because there is no spinner backing plate. Extra washers on the prop bolts could possibly be used with some minimum effect.
