Brief Description:  Transponder tests, oil pressure concerns.

Reinstalled seats and cowl.

Test flight with original N72851 transponder: Almost immediate reply lights on climb-out, Albany reported good transponder signal but no Mode C.

Test flight with Bill’s transponder: Albany reported seeing me WITH Mode C reporting 2800 feet (I was at 3000 indicated.)

New tach working fine, with readings at comparable power settings seemingly about 100 RPM below old unit. 2500 RPM on WOT at 80 MPH, seems about right with climb prop.

It was a very warm (80 degree) day, and oil pressure dropped rapidly as temperatures increased. At cruise only seeing 25 psi or so. Oil pressure ZERO on idle at roll-out. Did not make any additional flights due to oil pressure concerns. Also noted oil pressure gauge is sticking at times, then “popping” up to new reading. This casts doubt on accuracy of gauge.

Post flight research indicates low pressure at low RPM’s with hot oil not unusual for C85’s, but our readings seem unusually low. I don’t trust the old gauge and will order a replacement Monday morning. The oil pressure relief spring part has been changed since original, not sure which version we have, will order a replacement, and clean around pressure relief valve itself when new spring arrives.

We still have an oil leak that drips after flight. Seems to be further forward than the previous leaks.
