Brief Description:  Cleveland Wheels / Brakes - 1

If I'm going to keep tripping over the gear legs I might as well make it hurt more. Vans parts are the U-403 brake mount flange, U-405 (2) big spacer washers, U-601 Fairing Mounting Bracket and some bolts, nuts, washers and 6 spacers made from the provided tubing, each to be 13/32 long. I used a crocus cloth to slightly reduce the axle diameter so the U-403 bracket would slip on and move to the inner end of the axle. Sprayed some aerokroil penetrant (from Kano Laboratories) and wrestled it in place. Then, the Cleveland mounting flange was sooo tight that I had to run it around a 1 inch scotchbrite wheel in the drill press to increase about.001 diameter. It was probably the powder coating on the Vans mounting flange that made it so tight. On it went and I rotated it into position. Its designed to mount in many different positions for different aircraft After spending, no lie, 1 hour looking for the Vans U-403 attach bolt. I thought it was an AN5-17 like the preview plans showed, I found on the full plans that Vans changed it to a hex head special bolt- a 1/4-20 (coarse thread) end thread and with a nominal 5/16 shaft. Back to work, I used a .3075 reamer through the bracket and axle factory-drilled holes. That was perfect as I had to lightly tap the bolt through. Torqued it to 45 in/lbs (40-50 range) and marked with torque seal.
