Brief Description:  Engine Mount Installed

Reading Dwg 61. Surprise. Plans say 6 spacers required, 1/8 inch thick, 1 1/4 diameter with 3/16 middle hole. What? Confused. Write VAF asking what's that all about, AFTER, I made 6 such spacers out of scrap 1/8 aluminum. Sliced my thumb, etc etc. Don't you know VAFer Pat Hatch responds, ''Wendell, those are part of the mount and are already welded on, blah blah blah." Crap. Threw them in the spacer drawer. Doing this 2+ years now and still learn new every day.
Holes in firewall were close but not centered to the engine mount holes. I noted the top left was dead on, so I started with that one and with the step drill bit, enlarged the 3/16 hole to 3/8. Put scrap bolt through and tightened up to continue marking where the rest would lie. Top right was next. It needed to move towards 2 o''clock position, so I started with a 3 /16 round file and moved the hole that direction. Each time I did this I had to dismount the mount then remount, etc. When it was centered, I drilled it 3/8. Then bottom right hole needed to move to 10 o'clock position. Same drill. Then bottom left was dead center so I just opened it up to 3/8. On, off, on, off, tighten nuts, remove nuts, over and over. Tightened those four and then did the other two on the bottom near the gear leg socket. For those, I now just used a 3/8 drill and went about 1/2 way through. Removed mount, used step drill centered in the drill depression and englarged to 3/8. When you lightly push to the next(7/16) step, it very nicely deburs the stainless steel firewall hole. Done. Use hardware bolts for on/off excercize until ready to permanently attach the engine mount.

Ok. I put it on because there was no better place to store it for now.

I suppose I could put the nose gear on and have it up on 3 tires. Maybe.

Like most everything, I will remove it to do other firewall work.
