Brief Description:  Page 74 Hull Rivet Reinforcement

MODIFICATION NUMBER 12

Hull Rivet Reinforcement

One of the modification I have heard others do is reinforce the rivets going through the Turtle Deck to Hull connection. I heard talk of small children being sent back into the back of the Hull to place washers on each Rivet as they were pulled. The advantage of the Bowden Temporary Turtle Deck Install/Unstall is that you can install the rivet reinforcement and pre-drill all the holes before you set the deck. I got the 3/4" x 4' aluminum strip idea from Bill Starkey who tried gluing them in before he set the Turtle Deck, but when he drilled through the Turtle Deck and Hull, the Drill pushed the strip away before it drilled through the strip. Bill had a awful time trying to hold the strip against the Hull with a poll while drilling through the Turtle Deck to get a rivet in.

I got six 3/4" x 4' x 1/16" Aluminum Flat Bars from Ace Hardware, four for the back and two for the Nose Deck.

I clamped it and drilled through the pre-drilled holes in the Hull into the Aluminum Strips then Riveted them in on each end and the middle to hold them place.
