Brief Description:  Covering the Root End Close Outs.

With all the root end close outs prepared, I covered them with carbon fiber vinyl and riveted / screwed them in place.

In the previous post I showed the small plates I made to install at the front and rear, near the spars. I had decided to make these plates to cover up the bare aluminum that I didn't paint in that area of the wing, and there were some rivets and fabric thicknesses that I didn't want to try to cover up with vinyl applied directly to the wing, so I made the plates. In the center of the wing, between the two stock cover plates, a small section of the unpainted wing would show, but the area here is only about 1/16" and there are not obstructions, so I applied a strip of vinyl directly to the root rib in this case.

I took my time to get they pattern in the vinyl all going the same direction across the multiple panels. In my case, I made sure the bottom of the part was lined up parallel with the bottom of the vinyl when sticking it in place. Otherwise the diagonal lines made by the carbon weave would have been in all directions on the adjoining parts.

Before riveting the end panels in place I used a long 1/8" drill bit to drill through the nut clips installed in the bottom of the root rib. This will come in handy when locating the holes for the close out panel that mounts under the wing later.
