Brief Description:  Wing Tips.

I spent a leisurely Saturday getting the wing tips fit up.

I used acetone to get the part number decal off, and it took off the gel coat, so I switched to rubbing alcohol after that.

I made a hole finder out of a couple pieces of scrap aluminum, a little screw, and a pair of rivets. With masking tape on the wing, I measured about 2" out from the hole centerlines and drew a line along the wing chord. Then I drew spanwise lines at each hole, so I ended up with lines at each hole and an "X" two inches inboard from the hole location. I made a hole in my hole finder that would be centered on this X when the hole was properly located, and this made it very easy to find the holes with the little screw in the other end of the hole finder.

I started by drilling a hole and putting a clecko in the very front of the wing tip. This pulled and held the tip back against the spar for a nice fit as I located the other holes. I was originally going to fill this hole, but I think I will leave it screwed as it keeps things tight at the front of the spar.

Working front to back, and top then bottom, I located, drilled, and clecko'd all the holes. Then I measured 5/16" from the hole centerlines and trimmed the excess off the wing tip.

I made up a board as shown in the flap rigging section to set the flaps to neutral, then I used a small clamp to lightly center the aileron with the flap to determine the neutral position, and riveted the tip filler in place.

The last items were to enlarge the holes in the wing tip to allow some adjustment for a better fit without bulges between fasteners, and fit up the position lights for mounting later.

The tips will have to wait for paint until after my office / paint area is cleaned out again.
